Symphonics acts as the balancing entity, submits bids, and manages operational exchanges with RTE.
We also provide support for the administrative and technical compliance required to participate in the mechanism.
For facilities under EDF OA, RTE reconstructs the generation that would have been fed into the grid had the mechanism not been activated, in order to preserve the producer’s revenue while leveraging their flexibility within the Balancing Mechanism.
Operations and feed-in data are tracked through a portal that allows producers to view their portfolio and activations.
The service is designed to add a revenue stream without burdening the day-to-day operation of the wind farm.
How does it work?
The Balancing Mechanism allows RTE to correct the gap between generation and consumption in the power system in real time.
A renewable energy power plant can reduce its output when feed-in must be cut back, or increase it when it has spare capacity available.
RTE selects bids based on its needs and market rules, then sends an adjustment order to the selected participant.
This approach transforms the modulation of a renewable power plant into a revenue-generating system service.
It is becoming increasingly important as the share of variable renewable energy sources grows and episodes of low or negative prices become more frequent.
Equipment Control
Symphonics submits the balancing bids and then receives the activation orders transmitted by RTE.
If the setpoint is lowered, it reduces the power injected for the specified duration; if it is raised, it increases the power injected up to the available limit.
The platform automatically transmits commands to the power plant's control unit, which is interfaced with Symphonics.
Unavailability, limitations, and security constraints are factored in to ensure that only the flexibility that can actually be utilized is offered.
This market-control-measurement loop enables rapid, traceable execution that complies with RTE rules.
Example
A 1 MWp solar power plant is operating at full capacity during a period of high national solar generation.
RTE needs to reduce power injection and is implementing a bid to reduce power submitted by Symphonics.
Symphonics sends the command to the power plant's control system, which temporarily reduces its output.
The transaction is measured and tracked, and then valued in accordance with the rules applicable to the mechanism and the producer’s contract.
The producer monetizes a modulation capacity that, without aggregation and market-based management, would have had no added value.
